When John Fetterman’s health went south, his wife went north.
Gisele Barreto Fetterman, the wife of Pennsylvania Senator John Fetterman, left the country after her husband’s recent hospitalization for severe depression at a hospital in the Washington, D.C. region, due to the intense media attention they got. She resorted to social media to explain that she had packed her children’s belongings and driven to Canada while her husband remained in the hospital.
“I am not really sure how to navigate this journey but am figuring it out slowly. 1 week ago today when the news dropped, the kids were off from school and media trucks circled our home. I did the first thing I could think of … pack them in the car and drive,” Gisele tweeted.
Fetterman was taken to the hospital earlier in February for difficulties connected to his two previous strokes, but it was later determined that he was treated for mental depression. Although specifics are unknown, it was revealed that his work life was sadly deteriorating due to his health difficulties.
According to reports, Fetterman has privately admitted that his health is worse than he has publicly admitted. The Fetterman campaign produced letters from two doctors stating that Fetterman was expected to recover fully from his stroke and be fit to serve in the Senate.
On the campaign trail, the Fettermans mentioned the doctor’s notes. Gisele stated in an August interview that she never contemplated asking her husband to leave the campaign to focus on his health and family.
“No, I mean I waited to see what the doctors thought,” Gisele said. “The doctors all said he would make a full recovery and that he’s more in shape to do this.”
