Another GOP Rep. Jumps Into Speaker Race! – Here Are the Nine GOP Candidates Now Running For Speaker

Published on

Nine Republican lawmakers are currently vying for the position of House Speaker, following a rebellion by some members who are sometimes referred to as “RINOs” against Jim Jordan. Representative Gary Palmer from Alabama officially entered the race on Sunday.

The nine GOP Representatives competing for the role of Speaker include House Majority Whip Tom Emmer, Republican Conference Vice Chair Mike Johnson, RSC Chair Kevin Hern from Oklahoma, as well as Representatives Byron Donalds from Florida, Austin Scott from Georgia, Jack Bergman from Michigan, Pete Sessions from Texas, Gary Palmer from Alabama, and Dan Meuser from Pennsylvania.

On Friday afternoon, Kevin McCarthy gave his endorsement to Tom Emmer from Minnesota for the position of House Speaker, in the wake of a rebellion by some Republican members who are sometimes referred to as “RINOs” against Jim Jordan.

On the third ballot for House Speaker, 25 Republican members who are sometimes referred to as “RINOs” voted against Jim Jordan. The House of Representatives has been without a Speaker for over two weeks following a motion to vacate the chair filed by Matt Gaetz. Earlier this month, Kevin McCarthy was removed from the position of House Speaker in a vote of 216-210, with 8 Republicans supporting his removal: Biggs, Buck, Burchett, Crane, Gaetz, Good, Mace, and Rosendale.

Jim Jordan was unable to secure the 217 votes needed to become the Speaker in the initial ballot on Tuesday, with twenty GOP representatives voting against his candidacy.

The second round of voting for the House Speaker occurred on Wednesday morning, resulting in Chairman Jordan once again failing to secure enough support. This time, 22 Republicans cast their votes against Jordan.

Last Friday, in a confidential ballot, Republicans decided by a vote of 112-86 to remove Jim Jordan from the position.

Former Speaker McCarthy, on Friday evening, publicly supported Tom Emmer, a Minnesota Republican, for the role of Speaker, even though some refer to Emmer as a RINO.
