In 2021, Texas Governor Greg Abbott, a Republican, initiated Operation Lone Star to address the border crisis. As part of this effort, the governor directed officials to install razor wire along the border in an attempt to prevent the entry of illegal immigrants into the state. This decision sparked a conflict with President Joe Biden’s administration. While the Supreme Court has provided its perspective on the matter, there remains discontent among various individuals regarding the justices’ ruling.
On January 22, the Supreme Court issued a directive permitting Border Patrol agents to dismantle razor wire fencing along the border. The justices cast a 5-4 vote in alignment with the president, although the rationale behind their decision was not explicitly detailed. Justices Neil Gorsuch, Brett Kavanaugh, Samuel Alito, and Clarence Thomas expressed dissent, stating their disagreement with the decision and indicating that they would have rejected the plea to lift a lower court’s injunction, which had hindered the administration from taking down the fencing.
Even though the court directive permits Biden to dismantle the fencing, it does not prohibit Abbott from reinstating it if he chooses to do so.
After the Supreme Court ruling, certain Republicans expressed their frustration. Representative Chip Roy (R-TX) conveyed to Fox News Digital that Abbott should firmly express to the justices his discontent, suggesting that the state has a constitutional obligation to safeguard its citizens, and that should be the primary concern.
In a statement released on X, he asserted that the state should overlook the ruling, taking into consideration the challenges faced by Border Patrol agents as a result of the court’s perspective. Tucker Carlson expressed the view that the Supreme Court and other entities have opted to undermine the country, questioning why the men of Texas are not actively safeguarding their state.
Conservative Tim Young similarly urged the state to disregard the decision made by the justices.
Representative Joaquin Castro (D-TX) urged President Biden to assume command of the Texas National Guard if Governor Abbott persists in installing razor wire along the border.
An unidentified federal law enforcement official informed Business Insider that Texas has the liberty to install as much razor wire as it deems necessary, but Border Patrol agents would take it down if it hinders their operations in any manner.
