Nancy Pelosi Evicted From Her Private Office In The Capitol By Interim House Speaker

Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) received an order to promptly leave her Capitol concealed office by Wednesday. She criticized acting Speaker Patrick McHenry’s move, characterizing it as a significant break from established practices.

An email sent to Pelosi’s office on Tuesday conveyed the message that the office’s locks would be changed, and it would be designated for the use of the new speaker.

Additionally, a spokesperson for Rep. Steny Hoyer (D-Md.) disclosed that the former House majority leader had also been requested to vacate his concealed Capitol office.

The action took place shortly after McHenry was appointed as the House speaker pro tempore, which occurred following the removal of Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) in a momentous vote on Tuesday.

“With all of the important decisions that the new Republican Leadership must address, which we are all eagerly awaiting, one of the first actions taken by the new Speaker Pro Tempore was to order me to immediately vacate my office in the Capitol.”

Nancy Pelosi served as the speaker of the House in two distinct periods: initially from 2007 to 2011 and subsequently from 2019 to 2023.

Pelosi explained that she is currently in California, where she is grieving the loss of Senator Dianne Feinstein. Consequently, she is unable to collect her personal items from her office.

Senator Feinstein passed away at the age of 90 on Friday, after facing a series of health challenges.

On Wednesday, Senator Feinstein’s body will be honored with a lying-in-state ceremony at San Francisco City Hall, and Pelosi is scheduled to deliver remarks at a memorial service outside City Hall on Thursday.

Pelosi was not present during the House vote that resulted in the removal of McCarthy as House speaker. This vote was instigated by members of his own party.

Eight Republicans, namely Andy Biggs of Arizona, Ken Buck of Colorado, Tim Burchett of Tennessee, Eli Crane of Arizona, Matt Gaetz of Florida, Bob Good of Virginia, Nancy Mace of South Carolina, and Matt Rosendale of Montana, joined forces with 208 Democrats in a 216-210 vote to oust McCarthy from his position of power.
